“Guiding people in this environment is unique. I’m always looking for that wow factor, that expectation that around the corner is something that is going to blow people’s mind. It’s an amazing honour and pleasure to be able to experience that as a guide.” – Jeff Allen

EXPEDITION DETAILS

The expedition is a combination of dog sledding, sea kayaking and cross country ski touring or snow shoeing and allows expedition team members to experience not only these unique arctic means of traditional travel, but there is also a very strong possibility that you will also have the unique experience of encountering whales as well as making these journeys beneath the aurora borealis otherwise known as the northern lights.

The expedition members will meet in tromso at Kaffebonna at 1000hrs on the 16th January 2021 where we shall greet each other before making our way to the accomodation on Kvaloya, stopping on the way to pick up provisions for the week and making any final equipment purchases required by the team. Upon arrival at the accomodation you will have the opportunity to unpack and settle into your room. There will be a traditional Norwegian evening meal laid on for you and you shall have the opportunity to get to know the other team members better as well as the guide.

DAILY ROUTINE

On Sunday morning, after a hearty breakfast all members shall head out onto kaldfjord for a shake down paddle, going through any procedures which may need to be implemented through out the week, this is a chance for you to get to know the guide on a professional basis and for the guide to get to know you, if you have never practised rescues before, you will have an opportunity to do so, as well as receiving any other coaching required.

After the initial Sunday morning shake down paddle the daily routine will be to head off out to explore the islands and fjords looking for whale activity and to experience the northern lights if visible and to take in the local scenery. We have developed a good network of friends amongst the local whale watching community and we use this network to see if there are any whales in the region.

The accommodation is self catering and very comfortable, so when we do chose to return from our explorations you will be relaxing in comfort. On previous years, members of the expedition have chosen to cook for each other, this has created a mixed menu of cuisine with a variety of countries being represented on the trip.

EQUIPMENT

Expedition team members are welcome to bring their own personal activity/outdoor clothing and equipment but because of varying personal requirements, other equipment extraneous to the base equipment already provided and listed below, can be organized when booking.

SEA KAYAKING

Expedition Paddler will provide the following:

Sea Kayaks

Paddle’s plus spare paddle

Buoyancy Aids

Spray decks

Neoprene Paddle Mitts

Bilge Pump

Team members may wish to hire dry suits from the out fitter.

SKI TOURING/SNOW SHOES

Depending on the groups experience, the ski touring/snow shoe activity will be one or the other and includes:

Ski’s or snow shoes

Boots

Poles

For this activity team members will require a warm insulation jacket to wear whilst resting and shall also need to provide themselves with a small day pack for carrying this jacket when not in use as well as flask/cameras etc

DOG SLEDDING

All equipment is provided for the dog sledding activity but you will need to bring your own thermal base layers and light weight gloves to keep off wind chill when using cameras etc.

OTHER ITEMS

For all of the activities it is recommended that you bring with you several pairs of base layers, I would recommend merino wool but there are other alternatives to this.

You will also need a lightweight pair of gloves as well as warm mitts, a buff or face mask, a warm woolly hat (or 2) a hot drinks flask as well as a water drinks bottle, a camera of course and a small ouch pouch (personal first aid kit) to include any personal medication and to treat any small injuries you may receive during the activities.

I shall carry a well equipped first aid pack but this will not take into account any allergies that you may suffer from.
